80 years of freedom!
80 years of freedom, very ordinary, and yet very special
Every village tour has its own theme. During the cycle tour, we want to show as much of this as possible. But how can you show freedom?
On 5 May, you can see freedom. A day off, the Liberation Festival, flags. You no longer see that on 5 August, the day of the Village Tour.
For decades, we have had the freedom to organise a Village Tour on Walcheren, a different cycling tour every year where we can count on the help of many.
Our participants choose the first Tuesday of August for a pleasant day, for meetings but also to do something for a good cause: Terre des Hommes.
And then there are the volunteers -watch the word- of the other organisations who do their best on that day for their own Charity.
That all sounds pretty ordinary. To make freedom really visible, we might have to take a different approach. That is why we choose to show objects from a period when there was no freedom.
On Walcheren back then, a lot was built, a lot was lost and also a lot was changed.
To regain our freedom, great sacrifices were made. This can be seen in the many monuments and memorials scattered across Walcheren.
There was also a lot of damage during the liberation , something that can still be seen today.
When you have looked at Walcheren in this way, you look differently at our 'ordinary' environment and our 'ordinary' society.

In the participation booklet, alongside the route description, we will indicate where some of the above points can be seen.
At the stamping points themselves, this will be limited, most of it can be seen along the route. There are some locations where there is really a lot more to see. So much, in fact, that we recommend visiting here later. You will see and hear so much more, much more than can fit into one day of the Village Tour.
All the information where, when and what to see will be in the participation booklet and on the website.
